@ldf8u It is not even that, that impresses me about pearlman. His shifts are insanely clean. Not even a a touch residual vibration as he shifts upward. As my violin teach would say about those shifts, "Us mere mortals will crab walk up and down the fingerboard, no jumping into the stratosphere."

I first listened to Perlman playing Bazzini's La ronde des lutins nearly a decade ago now. I have yet to find an interpretation and performance to match. Even fellow virtuoso Vengerov (whom I also like) could not satisfy me. Perlman's technique and INSANE pizzicato get me every damn time.

@natzjustlookinaround Now that you mention it...I never noticed his massive hands lol. Makes me think of my old violin teacher, "What, you can't extended your pinky up a 7th? Why not?" Love him to death but I don't think he realized not everyone can play arpegios on the g string in first position, while also continiously extending up to 'e' and 'f' as if thats not a far stretch, without shifting. E, sure, but f, common, dude, break my finger off XD.

It's good but I don't like his approach to the double stops, not to say I could do better, I can't by a long a shot. I just prefer the double stops to be taken in a more traditional approach of breaking the bow in halves for each pairing of notes, as opposed to his more grace note like approach. But it's Bach, so there is no way to do it wrong, that is, unless you play it with no ortamentation, then its def wrong.

I love this version. Better: I am left exhausted and exhilarated by it. Heifetz: fantastic. Hilary Hahn: lovely. But only Perlman gets the tears rolling down my cheeks. @PrettyLittlePinup But how did they treat him? Maybe they were rude towards him so he was rude back. I like to think I am pretty good judge of character, and from the master classes I've saw him give, he seems like he would be one of the kinder/nicer violinist. I've met some really stuck up jerks in my time who think they rule the world because they are with this or that symphony, my impression from his lessons tells me personally, he is probaly more forgiving than most.

Truly Mr. Perlman's music is inspirational. We find common ground there. He has a relaxed mastery of the mechanics and incredible ability to give life to each note and phrase. I'm happy to play the very limited parts of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto that are within my ability. Then I sit down and listen to the perfection of Perlman. Aaaaahhhhh... @operalament As far as Heifetz's teaching goes, Sherry Kloss, Erick Friedman, Ayke Agus, & Eugene Fodor {among others} would completely disagree with you. Perlman is so worried about hurting someone's feelings & being misinterpreted that he fails to make a salient point. Heifetz taught students who could barely speak a word of English but never allowed a language barrier to get in his way. He was very direct. Heifetz, by the way, was fluent in at least 10 languages. Perlman is no Heifetz.

@DopeMcDoperson Don't think that is a very fair statement as -none- of them are experts in baroque music and none of them claim to be. Though Itzhak uses and era violin, he doesnt use and era bow, he uses the modern bow. Nothing wrong with that, but there are people who specialize in baroque music and it sounds VERY different with a baroque bow (they are balanced/made/shaped differently). Again, all experts at violin but not baroque music, try Chatham Baroque, very lovely group.

It was just about the most amazing thing we've ever seen. My sister and I are violinists and our other sister surprised us with tickets. Our mom also went along. We were literally about 15 feet away from him (seriously... we could hear him breathe!) But... to answer your question... it was an absolutely flawless performance. To experience him live is just unbelievable. I've never heard him sound anything less than perfect, but I would say yeah, he's even better in person! Dream come true.
