@mrphilipray LOL the "screaming" was intentional. She wasn't singing in the melody when she did it, and she doesn't reach her high notes by screaming, which would be indication of bad technique. And eating and resting have nothing to do with vocal technique. Vocal technique refers to how correctly and efficiently a singer produces the sound. Eating, resting, and drinking are listed under HABITS, habits which can affect the voice positively or negatively.

@Chimier Um....ever heard The song "Gotta move! by Streisand? She screams. Screaming factually ruins vocal chords. And for the record This is all a matter of opinion. There are many vocal teachers who will say streisands technique is often flawed. it depends on what they ate, how much rest and so on. My comment is VERY appropriate. If you can criticize whitney i certainly i can criticize you who is present to defend yourself. SHE is not. And Barbara sucks in MY personal opinion.

@Chimier & dunny20 Show me ONE singer, that will utilizing perfect and flawless technique. It doesn't exist. its easy to pick her apart because of her spotlight which you are obviously caught up in and forgetting she is a person, not perfection. The marvel of her gift is that wether she sings technically perfect or from her throat she sounds AMAZING. And in the end, no one cares what training you have, it simply boils down to how you sound and you touch the soul of the listener.

@mrlopez2681 Whitney only started to force her voice when she was using drugs heavily and that was in the mid-90s/late 90s. The drugs damaged her instrument, so she would push to achieve the same thing that she used to do so effortlessly before. That was her issue. Drugs, not technique or support.

@mrlopez2681 The primary source of power is resonance, which happens above the vocal cords. Whitney's support was absolutely impeccable. Neutral larynx, forward placement, tone was ALWAYS supported by the diaphragm. You can't have forward placement without it.

@a1d2h: yes -she does sound great. A person can sound marvelous & still not use the diaphragm as a source of "power". There have been occasions where I have seen her perform & noticed that she was forcing her voice here & there. Mind you, I am not saying that she NEEDED to do this to achieve great results, & it could be that her desire to inspire & entertain made her do things she knew was incorrect. I am perfectly aware that sound is not produced from the chest, diaphragm, etc. What I meant was that the primary source of "power", if you will, must come from the diaphragm, otherwise the voice will become damaged & never "grow", or deepen with age, as it should over time. BTW: I appreciate the fact that you are civil in this discussion - so many people get bent out of shape with this topic! :)
